Following the completion of the COMET COPD project, we warmly invite primary care colleagues from across Wirral to join us for a day of learning, reflection and practical education focused on improving the identification and ongoing care of people living with COPD.
COMET – COPD Targeted Management, Early Intervention and Treatment – was developed to support people identified as being at increased risk of COPD through the NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme on the Wirral. As further waves of lung cancer screening continue across Wirral, more patients with previously unrecognised respiratory disease are likely to be identified. With the COMET project now concluded, these patients will return to usual primary care pathways for ongoing assessment and management, making it important that practices are prepared to build on the learning from COMET.
So, what have we learned from COMET – and how do we turn that learning into better care for the patients who come next? This education day brings together the findings from COMET with practical clinical education and updates from services across Wirral, helping us build on the legacy of the project and prepare for future patients identified through lung cancer screening.
Morning programme (09:30am-12:30pm) COMET, lung screening and spirometry.
The morning will include: COMET: What did we learn?
We will share the outcomes and key learning from the COMET project, including what the project has taught us about identifying and managing previously undiagnosed COPD following lung cancer screening. We will also consider what happens next: how practices and services can respond to future patients identified through the screening programme and how we can embed the learning from COMET into routine care. This session will be particularly relevant to GPs, Practice Managers, respiratory leads and clinicians involved in service planning and COPD care.
Spirometry: interpretation, action and the Community Diagnostic Centre. We will be joined by colleagues from the Central Diagnostic Centre at Clatterbridge for an update on the current spirometry service. The session will also provide practical education on:
- Understanding and interpreting spirometry results
- Recognising common spirometry patterns
- Translating results into appropriate clinical action
- Understanding how the Community Diagnostic Centre spirometry pathway works
This session will be particularly useful for clinicians acting upon spirometry results within primary care.
Afternoon programme (13:00pm - 15:30pm) – delivering excellent COPD care.
The afternoon will have a strong practical focus and will be particularly relevant to Practice Nurses, ACPs, HCAs and other clinicians involved in COPD annual reviews and long-term condition management. Sessions will include: Delivering a high-quality COPD annual review.
Practical guidance on providing a comprehensive, patient-centred COPD review while meeting current QOF requirements and making every review count.
Getting our patients winter-ready
How good proactive COPD care can help reduce exacerbations, deterioration and avoidable hospital admissions. We will welcome speakers from across secondary care, community respiratory services and the Virtual Ward, alongside members of the wider multidisciplinary team, including physiotherapy colleagues, to explore how we can work together to support patients before, during and after an exacerbation.
COPD care beyond the consultation room Good COPD management is about much more than Medic*tion.Throughout the day, colleagues will also have the opportunity to meet organisations and services supporting people with COPD across Wirral, including A Better Life Wirral and other partners involved in neighbourhood working. Discover what is available locally and how these services can support smoking cessation, physical activity, wellbeing, self-management and the wider needs of people living with COPD.
Attend for the morning or stay for the whole day
We recognise that different parts of the programme will be relevant to different members of the primary care team. You are therefore welcome to: Attend the morning sessions only, including the COMET findings and spirometry update,or Join us for the full education day, including the afternoon practical COPD education sessions. There is no requirement to attend the full programme. Refreshments will be available and lunch will be provided for delegates who register for the full day. Whether you are involved in planning COPD services, interpreting spirometry, undertaking annual reviews or supporting people with COPD in your practice, we hope you will join us as we take the learning from COMET forward and work together to improve respiratory care across Wirral.
