Layers of Time: Drip Painting + the Science of StromatolitesIn the Greenhouse · Week 3 of 4
Some of the oldest signs of life on Earth are written in layers.
Stromatolites are layered rock formations built by tiny microbes. Over billions of years, mats of bacteria trapped sediment one thin layer at a time, leaving behind stripes and swirls you can still see in rocks today, including some found right here in Wyoming. Those same microbes helped fill our atmosphere with oxygen, so every breath we take owes them a little thanks.
This week, we’re building layers of our own. Grab a brush (or a stick!) and whip, flick and drip paint onto a canvas, adding color after color until your painting tells its own story of time. There’s no wrong way to make a mark, and every layer adds something new. You’ll hear about the science behind stromatolites and how geologists read history in rock, then take home a one-of-a-kind abstract painting.
No experience needed. All materials and refreshments are included. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little splattered!
