The Four Voyages of Columbus and 15th Century World Maps
Celebrate Italian History Week by joining us for a reception and talk on the four voyages that changed history.
Christopher Columbus relied upon a synthesis of ancient, medieval, and contemporary geographical knowledge to formulate his plan to sail to the Indies in the late 15th century and early 16th century. This presentation by historian Chris Carlsmith will explore some of those maps and how they influenced Columbus' ideas. From 1492-1504, Columbus made four voyages to the Americas.
Presentor's Bio: Christopher Carlsmith teaches History at UMass Lowell. He has previously been an Italian Fulbright Scholar and a Fellow at Villa I Tatti, Harvard’s Center for the Study of the Italian Renaissance in Florence, Italy.
