The doors will open at 18:00 with some wine and nibbles and the service will begin at 18:30.
This month we celebrate the would-be-100th birthday of the great John Coltrane with a full performance of A Love Supreme. The band includes:
- Kaidi Akinnibi, tenor sax
- Liam Dunachie, piano
- Larry Bartley, bass
- Winston Clifford, drums
Anyone is welcome to join the informal jazz choir, directed by Scott Stroman, which rehearses at 17:30
The service will also include a reading of sacred writings or poetry, a brief reflection, and a time of meditation or prayer. Our context is Christian, and the service is intended to be broadly inspirational and reflective.
Jazz is open, fluid, and improvisational. Musicians reach out to each other and find new art and music in the ways that they play together. You could say the same about spirituality and faith. And so this service centres on the music with spiritual reflection.
What is Vespers? The word comes from the Latin for "evening" and it's simply an evening prayer service. We use the word because of the spiritual nature of the service and continuing the tradition of Jazz Vespers services started in New York City in the 1950s.
