Our latest exhibition 'Colour amid Concrete' opens with a launch party on Saturday 17 October. It will be available to visit weekdays between 11am and 3pm.Colour amid Concrete is a multi-sensory exhibition of film, photography and installation exploring the lives of Gujarati women who travel from rural villages in Rajasthan to the cities of Gujarat to work on large construction sites.
At the centre of the exhibition is Majoor 9195, a documentary film by award-winning filmmaker and researcher Meera Darji. Through an immersive cinema vérité approach, Meera spent time alongside women whose working days can begin as early as 4am and continue late into the evening.
They are a largely invisible workforce: unregistered, unaccounted for and undercounted, earning very little while working in difficult and often precarious conditions.
Through visceral sound, long takes, photography and installation, Colour amid Concrete invites you to experience the physical intensity of this work and to consider questions of gender, caste, economic inequality, education, pay, recognition and what empowerment really means.
