When: Saturday, November 7th, 1-5pm
Where: The KoKo Lot (440 19th St., Brooklyn)
This one-day workshop led by Roger Ferney-Cortés invites participants to collaboratively transform a salvaged rolling gate into a collective assemblage. Often experienced as a boundary between public and private space, the rolling gate becomes a shared surface for experimentation and exchange. Throughout the day, participants will use airbrushes, hand tools, and a variety of mark-making techniques to inscribe and physically manipulate the gate's corrugated steel surface. Rather than focusing solely on graffiti or painted imagery, the workshop encourages participants to explore the material itself—bending, embossing, abrading, puncturing, and reshaping the surfaces. The workshop asks participants to consider how these barriers influence our day-to-day lives and how we attach meaning to them.
At the conclusion of the workshop, the rolling gate will be carefully deconstructed. Its individual slats and components will then be reassembled into a single composition, transforming an urban barrier into a collective artwork. No prior artistic experience is necessary. All materials and safety equipment will be provided. Low VOC paint will be used. Ages 8 and up - all participants age 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent, and waivers are required for all visitors to the KoKo Lot under age 18.
This workshop will be accompanied by an Open Play Day at the KoKo Lot from 3-5pm and followed by a screening of the short documentary, KoKo NYC – Sculptures on Wheels by Cody Powers from 5-6pm.
