About this Event
Participatory Drawings: A Community Collaboration
This project is an extension of Sonja’s famous “Snow Drawings,” but instead of using feet and snowshoes, we use our hands and fine-tip artist pens to create a collective masterpiece.
The Creative Process
- Simple & Meditative: No prior drawing experience is required. The process relies on a simple, circular pen gesture—similar to doodling—that is both relaxing and fun.
- Non-Representational Art: To ensure the giant drawing looks cohesive, we focus strictly on evolving patterns rather than drawing specific objects or "things".
- A "Living" Drawing: There is no preconceived plan. The patterns evolve naturally as people work together, and participants will occasionally trade spots to blend their individual styles into one unified work.
- Community Connection: The workshop serves as a catalyst for conversation. You will work alongside friends, family, and strangers, becoming part of a large team effort.
What Happens to the Art?
Because this is a collaborative effort, the final piece starts as one massive sheet of paper taped to the floor or wall.
- Harvesting the Work: Once the drawing is complete, it will be dissected into smaller, individual pieces.
- Framing & Installation: These pieces become unique artworks in their own right. In some cases, these are cut into uneven shapes and hung from the ceiling to create a "curtain" of floating art that moves with the air.
- Take-Home Art: Participants will be able to return to the gallery to pick up their piece (or multiple pieces) of the finished community drawing.
