Coffee & Conversation with the DeadWhat happens when the dead start talking back?
Join us on Friday the 13th for a special Coffee & Conversation exploring Spiritualism in Beverly and Essex County. We’ll begin with a “séance” inspired by the techniques used by nineteenth-century mediums, complete with a few mysterious messages from beyond the grave.
But don’t believe everything you see.
After the “séance,” we’ll pull back the curtain and reveal how some of these effects were created before diving into the fascinating history of Spiritualism. From spirit communication to séances and spirit photography, Spiritualism became enormously popular during the nineteenth century, attracting both devoted believers and determined skeptics.
We’ll explore how the movement took hold in Essex County, look at local stories and practitioners, and examine the sometimes-blurry line between faith, entertainment, fraud, and the very human desire to communicate with those we’ve lost.
