About this Event
In this 3-hour workshop, kids code an animated solar system and learn the real science behind how it moves. They explore the eight planets, the difference between the rocky inner planets and the gas and ice giants, and why planets closer to the Sun orbit faster. Each coder picks a planet and researches two fun facts about it.
Then they build it. Students place the Sun at the center of the screen and send a planet into orbit, tracing its path with a colored trail. They use real circle math, including pi and the circumference formula, to calculate each step of the orbit, then make their planet clickable so it pops up the facts they researched. It is astronomy, geometry, and animation in one project.
Coders who move quickly can add more planets, build an Earth and Moon system, stretch an orbit into an ellipse, or control the speed with a slider. Projects are built in Scratch, and no coding experience is required.
