"Groundcovers: Great Alternatives to Turf Grass" with
Kathy Jentz, Garden Speaker-Writer, Washington Gardener magazine
(For members who cannot attend in person, meeting will be recorded with a private YouTube link made available to members for viewing at their convenience.)
Groundcovers are low-growing plants that serve many different purposes in the landscape from limiting W**d growth to stabilizing slopes to adding texture to your garden. Kathy Jentz, author of "Groundcover Revolution" and host of the GardenDC 0odcast, will cover several of these beautiful, hard-working plants and the best kinds to use for your garden. Following her presentation, she will have autographed copies of her book available for purchase.
Kathy Jentz is editor and publisher of Washington Gardener magazine and hosts the popular GardenDC podcast. She is also the editor of the Water Garden Journal (IWGS), The Azalean (ASA), and Fanfare for the local daylily society. She is the author of "Groundcover Revolution" (2023) and co-author of "The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City."
A life-long gardener, Kathy believes that growing plants should be stress-free and enjoyable. Her philosophy is inspiration over perspiration. She speaks on gardening and has been honored to have presented programs at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the Philadelphia Flower Show, US Botanic Garden, the Historic Society of Washington DC, and many other prestigious venues. Audiences both large and small enjoy hearing her on topics as varied as dealing with deer to small-space gardening. For reviews of her recent speaking engagements, see her listing at the Great Garden Speakers website (http://greatgardenspeakers.com/user/kathymj).
Kathy’s work was awarded a Gold Laurel in the GardenComm 2023 Media Awards for both Public Speaking and Best Podcast Series (Overall) for the GardenDC podcast, and she earned a Silver Laurel for Social Media. One of her other hats is as the Green Media columnist for the Mid-Atlantic Grower newspaper, where she does a great deal of handholding and coaxing to get independent garden centers, plant breeders, and other horticultural businesses to join the social media revolution and maximize their online brands. She is the current President of the Silver Spring Garden Club and is on the board of several other garden clubs and organizations.

The Falls Church Garden Club is a community of gardeners who enjoy sharing knowledge, plants, and snacks. Our desire to learn more about gardening unites us.
The club meets ten months of the year – typically on the first Monday evening of those months– with a garden tour, a plant swap, club outings, and a large annual plant sale, which is open to the public. We maintain a native plant garden along the W&OD bike trail and donate to other community-serving organizations.
While anyone anywhere is welcome to join our club, most members tend gardens within or just outside the city of Falls Church. More broadly, our gardens are in Northern Virginia, Zone 7.
Whether you have a large, small, or container garden, or just wish for a garden, you will find a place with us. All experience levels are welcome!
