Conceptual Activism in the Struggle for Gender: Aids, Cells, and Other Conceptual Forms
Lecture abstract:
Analysis of concepts typically focuses on their substance and meaning. The form of concepts is often assumed--that they are abstract ideational structures or categorising devices, for example. But if concepts have a material life, and if their form varies, what can this contribute to the legal and political work that conceptual meaning does? This lecture draws on 23 interviews with interdisciplinary academics and recent research on struggles over gender and sex to explore how contested conceptual meanings take shape as worlds, currents, aids, and cells. The lecture will explore two core questions: How do concepts and counterhegemonic concepts assume these figurative forms? What power do concepts exercise through the forms they assume?
