Description:
Post-defense lectures typically frame the research journey via a familiar arc: topic and methodology selection, data collection, analysis, findings, and implications. While my presentation traces that exact scholar’s path, I take this opportunity to step into the unwritten space behind the scenes to offer a candid look at the human side of completing a graduate degree. Drawing on my own research journey, wherein I employed conversation analysis (CA) to examine how experienced co-teachers of gifted children coordinate classroom instruction in real time, I use the doctoral “hurdles” as basis to discuss some of the challenges faced and lessons learned along the way. By examining the human variables and obstacles alongside the academic ones, I explore how leaning into relationships, reframing setbacks, and even finding solace in scholarly inquiry became survival tools that carried me across the finish line for my Ed.D.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Allie Hope King received her doctorate in Applied Linguistics at Teachers College, Columbia University. A former Co-President of the Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI), she also holds an Ed.M. in Applied Linguistics from TC, an M.Ed. in Foreign Language Education and TESOL from the University of Pittsburgh, a B.A. in Spanish from Shenandoah University, and a B.A. in Modern Languages from Carnegie Mellon University. Her dissertation focused on classroom discourse, specifically examining co-teacher interaction through a conversation analytic lens. She is also deeply interested in research on doctor-patient interaction, an interest sparked by her experience surviving cancer during graduate school and realizing how tightly intertwined interaction and health outcomes can be. She currently runs the Community Language Program at TC.
