Clay workshop for beginners! Items are fired in a kiln after the workshop so you can create a fully functional & foodsafe piece of pottery.
About this Event

Event info:

Get creative with clay! During this freestyle clay workshop you can make and paint a small project of your choice. Each ticket includes 1 clay item to go through the kiln.

Our instructor will demonstrate basic handbuilding techniques and show you how to combine simple forms with sculptural elements to create fun and functional pieces for your home! Items are foodsafe, dishwasher safe, and microwave safe.

Popular project ideas include a plate, mug, plant pot, or ring holder - all with the option to add your own decorative touch. Make a mug with your morning mantra, a tealight that looks like a turtle, or a plate that's designed to fit your favourite snack.

During the workshop, please photograph your artwork and carve your name on the bottom so you can identify it when it comes out of the kiln. Thank you!

Artwork Pickup + Firing:

Items will be kiln fired after the workshop by our team of studio technicians. You will be emailed in 6-8 weeks after the workshop when items are ready for pick up. Your clay artwork will be air dried for 1 week and then fired in the kiln twice. Each firing takes up to 48 hours. Click here to see which workshop dates are ready for pickup!

Groups with children:

Children 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult who also has a ticket. 1 adult can bring up to 4 children (all must have a ticket). Tickets are the same price for all ages.

Support workers and personal care attendants are free:

If you have special needs or medical requirements and would like to come to claytime with a personal care attendant, please book online and then email Camryn at [email protected] to add a +1 to your booking free of charge. Personal care attendants are welcome to make a clay project during the program.

What to expect:
  • Pottery is about the process, not just the product. The focus of our beginner clay workshops is to have fun trying something new and enjoy making something by hand.
  • Embrace imperfection - your piece will be unique to you!
  • Be flexible and keep an open mind. It's a good idea to come to the workshop with a photo from pinterest or instagram to spark your creativity. Keep in mind that the projects you see online are done by professional potters with years of experience who may use different techniques and tools (many clay artists kiln fire in between steps, or leave their piece to air-dry for a day and come back to it when it's leather hard). Your instructor can help take your idea and turn it into something achievable within the workshop time frame.
  • Take a photo of your piece during the workshop so you can identify it. Pieces change shape, change colour, and might look very similar to things made by other people.
  • You are responsible for picking up your finished artwork. Firing takes approximately 3 weeks. We send out emails when items are ready for pick up. If you do not receive an email (they do sometimes get lost or go to spam!) you are responsible for emailing a photo of your piece and the date of your workshop to [email protected]. Items not picked up may be disposed of due to limited shelf space.
  • Oops - it fell apart! Working with clay takes practice and patience. Every time you work with clay it's a chance to learn something new. If your piece breaks because of a construction issue, we hope that you will come back and try again. Please listen to your instructor's tips for scratching & attaching, not overworking the clay, and making things the correct thickness (no thinner than a pencil, no thicker than 2 pencils). Our studio team handles every item with care, but we cannot guarantee that items will be free of issues when fired. Policies here.

Refunds & Date changes:

14 days notice required for a date change or refund (minus Eventbrite booking fee). 50% refund with less than 14 days notice (minus Eventbrite booking fee). No refund for same-day cancellations. Full refund policies here.
