👋🎭Sign Language Meets Shakespeare🎭👋
Designed for ASL interpreters, interpreting students, Deaf interpreters, and ASL-fluent theatre artists, this intensive combines language study, ASL interpreting, live performance training sessions led by Deaf artists, and practical performance training on the Blackfriars Playhouse stage. No previous experience with Shakespeare is required.
Join the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia, for three days of practical training in ASL interpretation for Shakespeare, classical texts, and live theatre.
Participants will explore:
• Acting and directing techniques for theatre interpretation
• Shakespeare’s verse, sonnets, and rhetorical structures
• Performance choices involving character, space, rhythm, timing, and audience connection
• Real-time scene work with evaluation and feedback
• Collaboration with ASC acting understudies
• Practical training on the Blackfriars Playhouse stage
Training moves beyond the classroom. Participants will study Shakespeare’s language, attend a performance, and practice how that language lives through movement, character, rhythm, space, and connection with an audience.
