Ready to bring the human figure to life on paper?This 3-session figure drawing class led by Gregory Newberry gives you the unique opportunity to draw from a live model, helping you develop your observation skills and deepen your understanding of the human form. Designed for all levels, from beginners to advanced artists, you’ll explore essential techniques such as gesture sketching, contour drawing, and more detailed renderings to build accuracy and confidence!
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this class offers a supportive space to grow at your own pace. Working from a live model allows you to see real movement, form, and light in ways photos simply can’t capture, making this an invaluable experience for any artist.

Session 1: Introduction, Contour & Gesture Drawing
Course overview, materials, and introduction to drawing mediums, including graphite, charcoal, and other options.
Basics of proportion, observation, and learning to see the figure.
Introduction to blind and modified contour drawing exercises.
Short contour studies from a live model.
Understanding movement, flow, action, and weight in the figure.
Timed gesture sketches ranging from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.
Gesture studies using a variety of drawing mediums.
Group critique and discussion.
Optional Homework: Practice contour drawings for 10–15 minutes daily and complete a gesture sketch series of 10–20 poses.
Session 2: Structure, Anatomy & Proportion
Introduction to basic anatomy and figure construction.
Learn simple ways to break the figure down into basic shapes and forms.
Explore measuring techniques and fundamental figure proportions.
Learn how to combine gesture with structure to create more accurate and dynamic drawings.
Practice applying contour and gesture techniques to more developed studies.
Complete mid-length studies from a live model, approximately 10–20 minutes each.
Optional Homework: Complete one longer figure study, approximately 30–45 minutes, focusing on proportion, structure, and observation.
Session 3: Studied Detail, Refinement & Final Drawing
Learn how to refine figure drawings through the use of light, shadow, value, and detail.
Explore and develop techniques using your preferred drawing medium.
Apply observation, gesture, structure, anatomy, and proportion to a longer sustained drawing.
Complete a 45–60 minute sustained pose from a live model.
Receive individual feedback and guidance throughout the drawing process.
Review how to develop a drawing from initial observation and gesture through structure, detail, and refinement.
Final group critique, discussion, and course wrap-up.
Reflect on techniques learned and identify areas for continued practice and development.

• Standard Eraser
• Charcoal
Optional Supplies:
• Kneaded Eraser
• Ebony Pencil
• Any paper to draw on other than Newsprint
• Any other desired drawing mediums
