A guided walk through The Square Mile looking at a cross-section of impressive Art Deco and Jazz Age architecture, all hiding in plain view
About this Event

We start our walk not far from Aldgate station – the exact meeting place will be clearly described in words via email after purchase (please see more info in the FAQs below).

......................................

Let me take you on a tour through The Square Mile's narrow backstreets and along its main thoroughfares to show you that squidged in amongst today's high-rise glass edifices there are some marvellous 1920s and 1930s architectural gems simply hiding in plain view.

We'll look at a variety of imposing styles that show how architects working for the world of finance and insurance used the clean lines of this innovative era to best advantage via Jazz Age metalwork, carved wood and stone reliefs, ziggurat and zig-zag embellishments and beautifully-tiled façades.

Discover who built these impressive structures and what went on inside. Hear about shopping and shipping, money and markets, tea and coffee, fine art and fire brigades... even horse-racing and stamp collecting.

  • 2 hours / just over a mile / ends near Monument station

Customer feedback: "As someone who worked in the City for most of the 80s and 90s I must admit I had never even given the buildings a second glance. Thank you so much Jane" / "This was marvellous – I will be coming back for more Art Deco routes with you as I love how you point out all the little quirks and make it so much more interesting than other academic-style guides. And you make it fun too. Thanks" / "What an amazing tour! I’ve worked in the City for 17 years and was so excited about how you opened my eyes to places I’ve passed so many times. It’s further renewed my love of the City!" / "I've done this route with Jane twice now, with two different friends, and I'd do it again!!" / More feedback here

Other Art Deco walks and talks available – please check my listings.

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com

FAQs

Where does this walk start / what if I am running late?

  • Important re meeting point info – please do not rely on any QR codes, postcodes and maps sent via apps as these often give incorrect information.
  • The specific meeting point will be clearly described in words within the Order Confirmation email sent to you immediately after your purchase...
Scroll down to the bottom of that email to the Additional Information section where you will find a written description of where to find me, as well as details of how to play catch-up should you be running late on the day.
As a back-up, the same information will be provided within a reminder sent 24hrs before the event.

Can I just show up and pay on arrival?

  • No – this is a ticketed event with a maximum group size – places must be booked in advance.

Do I have to bring a copy of my ticket to the event?

  • No – you will simply be asked your name

Can I get a refund / is my ticket transferrable?

  • As you can appreciate, refunds and reallocations do not apply to people who simply do not show up on the day!
  • You can organise your own refund through Eventbrite's ticketing system up to 48 hrs before the walk starts. However, please note that the booking fee (absorbed within the ticket price) is not refundable.
  • Alternatively, I can hold your purchase for transfer to another Jane's London Walk within the next three months – please notify me in writing via email/text at least 48 hrs before this walk is due to start.

What if it's raining?

  • Walking tours will go ahead, rain or shine.
  • However, if severely adverse conditions are forecast, or other unforeseen complications cause the event to be cancelled, you will receive notification and a full refund.

Is this tour suitable for wheelchairs?

  • The walk will be mostly on standard pavements and should not pose any problems further to those experienced on an average high street. However, there are a few narrow alleys and uneven surfaces to contend with on this route, specifically in some little pedestrian streets adjacent to Cornhill.
