Join Us for Citizen Science + Sensory Mapping!
Activities include:
- Identifying plant and animal species
- Taking soil and water samples to be analysed in a lab
- Uncovering hidden areas of the park
- Learning to connect with nature using your senses
We will have an expert ecologists teaching how to identify different species - but we will also be using the free iNaturalist app (android or apple, best to download and register in advance). This app lets you upload photos or recordings and learn about the species you've captured. That data is used by scientists to do their research!
We know our park used to be used for agriculture but we don't know in what state this left the soil. We know the stream comes from the Heatons, but we don't know what it has picked up along the way. By becoming Citizen Scientists we will finding out more, letting us undo damage and select the best plants to introduce.
Half of Rodney Fields is neat, flat grass - the other half is wild. The brambles have recently been cut back, but this is only temporary. They will soon grow back! Now is the time to reach into the farthest corners of the park to see what is under the undergrowth.
We can use scientific measures to understand the park, but the best tools we have at our disposal are our senses. Mapping our perceptions across the park captures our experiences as we immerse ourselves in the environment. This connects the physical and imagined worlds - a great remedy for spending too much time indoors and online.
