What if a discarded garment could become the starting point for meaningful inquiry, creative thinking, and learning?
This hands-on professional development workshop invites educators to explore fashion upcycling as a powerful context for inquiry-based learning, connecting the Reggio Emilia approach with the IB learner profile, approaches to learning, and Design Cycle.
Through the lens of sustainable fashion, educators will experience the learning process as learners themselves—observing, questioning, researching, experimenting, designing, making, reflecting, and revising. Working with discarded garments and everyday materials, participants will explore how the environment can become a “third teacher”, how materials can provoke curiosity and dialogue, and how open-ended design challenges can foster student agency, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
The workshop moves beyond making a final product. Instead, it focuses on the process of thinking and learning through materials: noticing possibilities, embracing uncertainty, learning from failure, documenting thinking, and allowing ideas to evolve.
Participants will explore practical ways to bring these principles into their own learning environments, whether through Visual Arts, Design, STEAM, Sustainability, PYP/MYP interdisciplinary learning, or project-based inquiry.
By the end of the workshop, educators will have experienced a complete design inquiry and developed ideas for creating their own hands-on, student-centered learning experiences that connect creativity with environmental responsibility.
