A metal-rending car crash announces the beginning of a meticulous study of masculine malaise that never swerves from its course. Vain and insecure Oxford don Stephen’s (Dirk Bogarde) life is thrown into turmoil when he falls in love with one of his students, Anna (Jacqueline Sassard). But she has also attracted the attention of William (Michael York), a wealthy student, and Charley (Stanley Baker), a colleague of whose professional success and self-confidence Stephen is profoundly envious.
Written by Harold Pinter, it is staged as a summer idyll desperately trying to retain the civility of its surface. Accident is a crash course on how to make a great film.
Screening as part of Cinema Rediscovered on Tour.
