About this Event

When: 15th April 2026, 18:00 - 20:00

Where: Station Approach, City Centre, Reading RG1 1LZ

Speakers: Brain Hains – Volunteer at Didcot Railway Centre

Brian is a lifelong railway enthusiast and has been involved with railway preservation for over 45 years, in various activities centered on restoration, maintenance, operation and education.

For most of that time he has been a steam driver / instructor at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway, but has also ventured out elsewhere. He is now a tour guide at the Didcot Railway Centre.

In addition he also run a website on behalf of the New Europe Railway Heritage Trust, an organisation to support and advise heritage railways in Eastern Europe, and to produce their quarterly newsletter “Eastern Star.”

The agenda for this presentation consists of the following topics:

• The contribution that the UK has made to steam locomotives worldwide.

• Some of the historic locomotives that we have exported, imported, and others that were exported and then subsequently repatriated.

• A focus on to specific countries, namely the USA and Russia, as well as to relationships between the USA and Russia in terms of locomotives given to Russia as a form of aid.

• A little historical context is provided where that may be helpful.

The format is based on the judicious use of PowerPoint, with a Q/A session at the end as time permits.

As usual with Thames Valley Group events, afterwards attendees are warmly invited to continue the evening at the Three Guineas Public House outside Reading Station.
