Charles Dickens didn't simply write about Christmas.
He helped change the way we think about it.
And the story begins here, in Rochester - the place where Dickens first fell in love with Christmas as a five-year-old boy, and a city that remained part of his imagination for the rest of his life.
This December, join Rochester History Guided Tours for a very different journey into Dickens' Christmas.
Walking through the historic streets he knew so well, we'll explore the memories, experiences and people that helped shape Dickens' understanding of Christmas - before looking beyond the snow, holly, turkey and plum pudding to discover what he was really trying to say when he wrote A Christmas Carol.
Because beneath one of the warmest and most familiar Christmas stories ever written lies something considerably more challenging.
We'll uncover the social realities, moral questions and darker truths of Victorian Britain that lie behind Scrooge's journey - including parts of Dickens' message that have often been softened, changed or simply left out of the film and television versions.
Why did Dickens write A Christmas Carol?
Who was he writing it for?
And more than 180 years later, have we really understood what he was trying to tell us?
This is not a ghost tour.
It is an adults-only exploration of Dickens, Rochester and the story that helped redefine Christmas - told in the streets of the city where his own relationship with the season began.
For Christmas 2026, the same full experience is available at 2.30pm in the afternoon and 6.30pm in the evening.
