About this Event
On November 9, 2025, Chris Hazelton's organ quartet and saxophonist Cory Weeds played a set of Huey Lewis songs at Westport Coffee House, in Hazelton's own arrangements. Plastic Sax found Lewis songs like "Do You Believe in Love" held up next to the few jazz tunes in the 90-minute set, and later ranked the show No. 7 among its top performances of 2025.
From 2007 to 2009 he lived in New York and played Harlem clubs like Minton's Playhouse, the Lenox Lounge, and Showman's Jazz Lounge, and in 2009 he studied with Dr. Lonnie Smith. Back in Kansas City he assembled Chris Hazelton's Boogaloo 7 in 2013, a seven-piece band that held a seven-year Friday night residency at the Green Lady Lounge, and in 2014 he started Sunflower Soul Records, which put out the band's 7-inch singles and two LPs. By Plastic Sax's tally of DownBeat's Critics Poll, he placed 19th for Rising Star Organist in 2025 and 15th in 2026.
His newest record, In Rotation, came out May 15 on Cellar Live. It has tunes by Jimmy Heath, Horace Silver, Billy Strayhorn, Lee Morgan, and Tadd Dameron, plus three Hazelton originals: "Paris of the Plains," "First Snow," and "Brisk Breeze Through the Trees."
