Description:
Why do we choose the repertoire we play? What does this repertoire say about what we value as musicians and educators? Selecting repertoire is a vital and crucial element of teaching at any level but can be incredibly challenging, particularly when considering the myriad issues that affect a concert program.
How do we judge if a piece of music is worth the time investment, both for ourselves and for our students? How do we incorporate voices from underrepresented communities as well as new voices from our own community into our programming, and why does this matter? Come prepared to contribute to this open discussion so we can tackle these essential questions together.
The second half of the session will focus on repertoire suggestions for all levels, and you will leave with a list of Dr. Gaudry’s favourite pieces right now - “Gaudry’s Gems!” This session will be relevant to anyone who conducts wind groups, regardless of experience level or years of service.
Dr. Danielle Gaudry Associate Professor of Wind Conducting and Director of the Wind Orchestra McGill University
