FAQ
What will we do during the camp?
The participants will form a 3 or 4-part choir (SAB / SATB). The musical director will teach us beautiful music which we will sing together. Plus, there will be fun activities (art, sport, drama), and musical training using the internationally developed 'Chorister Training Scheme'.
What will happen in the evening session?
The evening session is an optional session for participants aged 13-18. It will run from 4:30-8pm on Wed 3rd and Thurs 4th of July. We will eat dinner, and either watch a movie or play games.
What styles of music will we sing?
We will sing Church music in a variety of styles - traditional, contemporary and gospel.
Who are the staff?
Staff members include:
Musical director - Alessandro Pittorino (Julliard School), Organist; Conductor
Accompanist - Sarah Mills Menogue (B.Mus, AdvGrad Dip Kodály Institute), Teacher; Conductor; Pianist
Voice for Life examiner - Ruth Styles (AMusA), Music teacher; RSCM WA committee member; Organist
Additional staff are teachers, parents or musicians.
All staff have working with children checks and have been personally invited by the organising committee because of their experience on previous camps and musical experience.
What should we bring?
Wear warm and comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle and a pencil. We'll provide everything else, including all music, activities and yummy food.
Can parents watch?
Yes, we are planning a short service to end the last day. Parents and guardians are welcome to join us at 4:30pm on Friday as we sing the pieces we've learned. We ask that parents do not stay during the camp, as we are required to ensure that all staff have a valid Working with Children Check.
Can I bring my siblings or my friends?
Yes! Camp has a very family friendly atmosphere, with siblings and cousins attending together. You may like to bring a friend from school or choir. But don't worry if you don't know anyone, you'll soon make friends on camp. It's great to hang out with like minded people doing something you all love.
What is the RSCM WA?
The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is an interdenominational association dedicated to improving Church music, regardless of style. The RSCM originated in the UK in 1927 and there are now branches all over the world. The Western Australian branch (RSCM WA) was formed in 1956 and is part of RSCM Australia. https://rscmaustralia.org.au/state-branches/western-australia/
Do I need to be Christian?
No! Everyone can enjoy singing Church music, regardless of their beliefs. The music we choose is diverse and high quality. We are an ecumenical organisation, which means we welcome people from all Christian denominations and all faiths.
I / my child can't read music. Is that ok?
Of course! We welcome participants at all levels of musical ability. Our staff are experienced singers and can sit beside participants who are new to reading music. As we are divided by voice part, and not age, often the older participants help out the younger ones too. It's an amazing experience to sing in a 3 or 4 part choir if you are used to singing in a primary school choir or all boys/girls high school choir.
