Experience Kreta Ayer, a predominantly Cantonese area in the 19th century, known for round-the-clock entertainment.
About this Event

Experience street art, historic shophouses, and vibrant, round-the-clock entertainment in one of Singapore’s historically rich districts! Join our docents as we explore the intriguing lanes of Kreta Ayer and rediscover familiar streets from a fresh perspective. Learning about the delicate balance between conservation and urban renewal as we uncover the rich history behind topics such as former brothel houses, Cantonese Opera, death houses, coolie quarters, and bustling markets - all of which contribute to this area’s unique character.

Each Heritage Walk delves into various aspects of Singapore’s 200-year history, offering insights into the architecture, street names, diverse ethnicities, and the stories that converge to shape our unique, vibrant little red dot. Discover how conservation efforts have preserved Kreta Ayer's heritage while allowing for modern development.

About the Chinatown Heritage Walks

Thank you for your interest in joining the Chinatown Heritage Walks! This is a series of weekly walks to the four districts within the Chinatown Conservation Area.

A collaboration between the URA and Friends of the Museums (FOM), these two-hour walks are led by FOM docents. Besides learning about the rich history of Chinatown, you will also discover how our conservation efforts are an integral part of URA’s commitment to sustainable urban development, shaping the distinctive, liveable and endearing city we live in today.

Through these walks, you will also gain a better appreciation of the challenges in balancing different needs for land and the innovative solutions that we have adopted to overcome them, in tandem with URA's efforts to plan sustainably across our social, economic and environmental realms.
