About this Event
Children's Atlas of Wine X Heritage Wines Present:
If Not Burgundy, Then Where?
Burgundy — a limestone escarpment in northern France with a gentle slope facing southeast — has come to stand in for the very idea of wine as a transmission of place.
(Also: monks, vineyards with names ranked according to quality, pinot noir, yadda yadda yadda.)
Maybe because of that specificity, it's also become coveted and collected, sold by the same auction houses that handle the high-end art market, hoarded and prized. Once the favorite region of geeks and poets, Burgundy is, increasingly, wielded as a weapon of high luxury.
Meanwhile, a funny thing has happened: everywhere wine regions are emerging or being revived, Burgundy has supplanted Bordeaux as the model for what fine wine can look like.
The most exciting wines around the world are being made by farmers putting the fruits of their labor into bottle rather than a chateaux as brand, intimate communion with place, elegance and subtlety over raw power.
What was Burgundy, anyways? Can we still afford to find and drink it? Where are the places that dream that dream today?
Tickets include 5 tastes of wines that evoke the idea of Burgundy, 15% off any featured bottle at Heritage Wines next door, and an hour and a half interactive class with James Sligh of the Children’s Atlas of Wine.
Drink Curiously is a series of introductory classes focused on providing entry points for curious drinkers.
