At just 6 years old, Chesney Weatherman was involved in a serious ATV accident and Life Flighted to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Upon arrival, she underwent a 5½-hour surgery that included facial reconstruction, eye surgery, and treatment for multiple lacerations. Due to the severity of her injuries, Chesney was placed in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator for two days.Her family was initially told they could be facing at least a month in the hospital. Along with the uncertainty of Chesney’s recovery came the financial and emotional challenges of being away from home, missing work, and being separated from family.
The Stead Family Children’s Hospital stepped in to support the entire family. They provided meals, drinks, financial assistance, activities, gifts, and countless moments of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.
By the grace of God, the prayers and support of so many people, and an incredible medical team, Chesney was able to leave the hospital just one week late, almost to the exact day and hour that she arrived.
Her journey didn’t end there. Chesney continues to travel to Iowa City for appointments and future surgeries, and her family remains incredibly grateful for the care, compassion, and support they have received.
From Bingo and prizes to special gifts before surgeries, these moments of joy helped make an incredibly difficult experience a little brighter.

Last year, Chesney's family hosted a 16-inch softball tournament benefiting the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and raised an incredible $4,900!
This year, the family is bringing their love of darts to the fundraiser!
With Chesney’s mom serving as the ECS Marshalltown Dart Coordinator and both Chesney and her dad enjoying the sport, a dart tournament felt like the perfect way to bring people together while supporting an incredible cause.

On August 7th, Chesney and her family returned to Iowa City for another full day of appointments, and received some exciting news!
Chesney has officially been cleared to begin appointments with the orthodontist and will be getting braces to help correct her bite following her broken jaw. After everything she has been through, this is another exciting step forward in her recovery.
The Weatherman family has made it their goal to give back to the hospital that was there for them when they needed it most.
