Cheslav Singh is a Canadian pianist based in London with international performance and pedagogical experience. He has performed at renowned venues in Rome, London, New York, Naples, Paris, and Toronto, as well as on radio (RAI 3, 2020) and television (TVP 3, 2020), in a wide variety of contexts. His repertoire ranges from Beethoven to free jazz. Recognized for his ability to “construct solid geometric sonorities, very well planned…,” his playing has been described as “engaging and meditative” (Massimiliano Cerito, June 2022), and his work has been characterized as one in which “every performance is a genuine adventure into the unknown” (Jo Hutton, The Wire, 2023).
Since 2011, he has been actively involved in contemporary classical music, co-founding the audiovisual group a=b=x=y that same year. His compositional output includes works for both small and large ensembles. In 2015, he co-founded the Our ‘PL’ace Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the proliferation and dissemination of contemporary art—including music, visual art, audiovisual art, and dance—and to fostering cultural exchange between Europe, North America, and India. Among its many successful initiatives, he has co-curated the annual international audiovisual art festival Światłodźwięki in Poznań, Poland, since 2015.
Actively exploring extended playing techniques at the intersection of acoustic and electronic music, he frequently prepares pianos and challenges both himself and his listeners to discern the instrument’s vast sonic possibilities. He also performs on the organ, having studied with the prominent Bach scholar Dr. John Derksen, and brings a deep appreciation of diverse keyboard techniques to his practice. Having learned piano tuning—primarily for his own use—he enjoys experimenting with various temperaments, investigating their sonic potential on the piano, and cultivating an interest in traditional tuning systems from around the world. He is also an active student of Gurbāṇī Saṅgīt (traditional Sikh devotional musical praxis dating from the fifteenth century) and has had the privilege of working with and for its foremost exponent, Bhai Baldeep Singh, a thirteenth-generation scion of the tradition, since 2013.
