"Taste and understatement. Swing and savoir-faire. Grace and grooves. Intimacy and panache. Singer Charmin Michelle delivers all of the above and more." This is what the Minneapolis Star/Tribune had to say about this charismatic chanteuse whose conversational style recalls the late Billie Holiday and other legendary ladies of jazz. And, yet, her music is free of tiresome camp and easy nostalgia. She's a savvy songstress and, while putting her own imprint on a melody, is always respectful of those who first inhabited it.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Charmin moved to Minnesota while still a child and has called it home ever since. She has performed at jazz festivals throughout Europe with pianists Mulgrew Miller and Kirk Lightsey, and saxophonists Harry Allen and Grant Stewart, among others. The late Brother Jack McDuff, one of her biggest fans, was instrumental in launching her career abroad. He said, "She's really different. I call her 'Chow Mein.' With her trio, less is more. And they're right in the pocket."
Arne Fogel is one of Jazz88’s “Jazz Legends” for 2026, a 2018 inductee into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, and a 2008 inductee into the Mid-America Music Hall of Fame. He appears frequently as a singer at the top jazz venues in the Twin Cities.
He has written, produced and/or appeared in dozens of concert presentations in such venues as Orchestra Hall (where he performed as Rosemary Clooney’s opening act for her penultimate career appearance), Bloomington Center For the Arts, Crooners, Hanifl Center for the Performing Arts, Hopkins Center for the Arts, 3M History Theater, Phipps Center for the Arts, The Fitzgerald Theater, The Capri Theater, and many other venues throughout the Upper Midwest.
Arne has performed in many live radio concerts and productions, including three years as a regular performer on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. Arne has performed on nearly 1,500 recording sessions as a vocalist on jingles and film soundtracks, and recorded, produced, or co-produced several albums. For 12 years he produced and hosted “Arne Fogel Presents” on the stations of the Minnesota Public Radio network, and for over 50 years has entertained radio audiences with his programs on SiriusXM, WWTC-AM, KLBB-AM, KTWN-FM, Netradio.com, and Bing Crosby Internet Radio. Currently, Arne appears on KBEM-FM in the Twin Cities.
