About this Event
This month’s walk we will join the 24th Annual Charles Bradlaugh Commemoration on Sunday 27 September. We will meet at the Charles Bradlaugh pub on the Mounts from 2pm, then walk to Bradlaugh’s statue in Abington Square for the 3pm commemoration.
The commemoration marks Bradlaugh’s legacy and his close association with Northampton. This year’s theme highlights his support for Giuseppe Garibaldi and the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian unification. Please wear something red if you can; Garibaldi and his supporters famously wore red shirts.
After the commemoration, we will walk from Abington Square to the Garibaldi Hotel in Bailiff Street, via the Unitarian Chapel, built by Moses Manfield, one of Bradlaugh’s key local supporters, and the Baptist Chapel in St Michael’s Road, associated with one of Bradlaugh’s most outspoken local critics, the Rev. Henry Bradford.
The walk is free and there is no cap on numbers but booking a place lets us know how many to expect
