This varied 5.6-mile circular walk combines open countryside, woodland paths, local history and far-reaching views on the boundary between Rochdale and Oldham.
Starting near the Stakehill Industrial Estate area, the route heads east across rolling farmland before entering the wooded slopes around Tandle Hills. Here, walkers can enjoy peaceful woodland trails, mature beech and oak trees, and occasional viewpoints overlooking the Irk Valley and the surrounding Greater Manchester landscape.
The walk then loops around the countryside beneath Royton, following a network of tracks and field paths before returning westward towards Trub. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to appreciate the contrast between urban Rochdale and the surprisingly green belt that separates neighbouring communities.
A short climb onto the higher ground provides the majority of the route's 466 feet of ascent, but the gradients are generally steady rather than strenuous. Good paths make this an enjoyable intermediate walk suitable for most regular walkers.
