About this Event
The role of the Certified First Responder (CFR) is to serve as the first tier of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system by providing initial assessment and limited resuscitative care until Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers arrive. Although all Certified First Responders share this primary responsibility, the additional knowledge and skills required may vary depending on their work environment and their role within the local EMS system.
Effective January 1, 2001, New York State regulations require that an ambulance service have an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher-level provider attending to the patient both at the scene and during transport to the hospital. Therefore, the CFR course is specifically intended for individuals who provide short-term emergency care prior to ambulance arrival and who do not have a responsibility to package or transport patients.
The program focuses on preparing responders to deliver immediate lifesaving interventions and effectively support arriving EMS personnel within their defined scope of practice.
