There’s something special about using a piece you’ve made yourself. This winter, join us in the Fig House in the Walled Garden for an evening of creativity, where you’ll shape your own ceramic candle holder by hand and learn how to scent your home with fragrances chosen just for you. It’s a chance to slow down, try something new and create a piece with meaning, one that will last for years and bring warmth to the long, cosy evenings ahead.Making with clay
The evening begins with ceramicist Victoria Brook, who will introduce you to coil building, one of the oldest ways of making pottery by hand, used for thousands of years before the potter’s wheel. You’ll roll clay into long, even lengths, then layer them one on top of another, round and round, gently smoothing each one into the last until the walls of your candle holder take shape. It’s a relaxed, forgiving technique that needs no wheel and no experience, and Victoria will be on hand throughout to guide you.
Each piece is built around a mould made to fit a MIXMY candle insert, so what you create is made to be used and enjoyed. Once your form is complete, you can make it entirely your own, smoothing the surface for a clean finish or leaving some of the coils visible for texture, then carving patterns or pressing in flowers, faces, initials or words that mean something to you.
Scenting your home
From there, we’ll move through to the Boiler Bar, where a glass of sparkling wine and a seasonal sweet treat from the Estate will be waiting. Vicky from MIXMY will then introduce you to a collection of fragrance oils, from fresh and green to warm and woody, and show you how scents can be layered and combined. You’ll learn how to build a fragrance that suits your own space and the way you live in it, ideas you can carry into every room of your home.
To finish
The evening closes with time to browse and shop the MIXMY collection, where you can choose a complimentary candle insert to complete your handmade holder. Your ceramic piece will then be carefully fired and ready to collect from the estate around four weeks later, just in time for the festive season. Whether it takes pride of place on your own table through the winter months or becomes a thoughtful handmade gift, it’s a piece with a story behind it. We’ll be in touch as soon as it’s ready.
