Old Coach Road & Fishers Track, Timber Trail & Forgotten World Highway
A Four day ride (as individual day trips) linking three iconic North Island experiences
Day One – We will depart Stratford at 8am and make our way to Ohakune via Whanganui and SH4. After lunch we will transport group to Horopito so you can ride the Old Coach Road back to Ohakune at your own leisure.
Old Coach Road Track — Horopito to Ohakune
Recommend allowing 3 hours for leisurely stops at Viaducts and historic sites. Step back in time on the Old Coach Road, where cobblestone remnants of the early 1900s coach route wind through native forest and volcanic foothills. This scenic trail links Ohakune and Horopito, following the historic railway alignment with restored viaducts and sweeping views of Mount Ruapehu. It’s a gentle yet rewarding 15km ride — perfect for warm up.
Nights stay in Ohakune – motel – lunch and dinner included
Day Two – Today we will be heading to Taumarunui for a 2-night stay. You will be transported to National Park for your Fishers Track ride. The van will be waiting at the end of the track; however you would then also have the option to ride on the metal road to Retaruke Valley/Horse Monument. If you choose to load up at end of main track you will have a wait at the horse monument for the rest of the group – there will be a picnic styled lunch at the monument.
We will make our way to Taumarunui for our 2-night stay.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner included
Fishers Track — Volcanic Downhill Adventure – 17km
Starting from National Park Village, Fishers Track launches riders straight into the heart of volcanic country. The route begins with gentle climbing through tussock and farmland before dropping into a flowing downhill with sweeping views of Mount Ruapehu and the surrounding plateau. It’s a confidence building ride that feels wild yet accessible — With its mix of open landscapes and easy logistics, Fishers Track is pure backcountry joy.
Day Three – Todays ride is 42km Piropiro to Ongarue. You will be transported to Piropiro and picked up at Ongarue.
Timber Trail — Southern Half Day Ride
The southern half of the Timber Trail is a perfect one day adventure through Pureora’s deep podocarp forest, rich with history and gentle gradients. Starting from Piropiro, the trail winds past old tramlines, mossy cuttings and towering rimu as it follows the curves of the historic Ongarue logging route. Riders enjoy a mix of flowing forest sections, swing bridges, and wide open glades before descending toward Ongarue. It’s a rewarding, story filled ride — achievable, scenic, and ideal as the centerpiece of this tour.
There is no road access on this section (once you start riding) ie no van support. From Ongarue group is transported back to Taumarunui.
Breakfast – packed lunch to take on trail - dinner
Day Four – homeward bound along Forgottten World Highway with one more adventure. Be dropped of at Paparata Station and ride through the Tangarakau Gorge. At end of gorge (17km ride) you have the option to carry on to the Mt Damper Falls carpark (making a total of 33km) – another picnic lunch before an easy grade 2km walk to the Mt Damper Falls. A natural homecoming route. Stop at Whangamomona Hotel before the final stretch to Stratford.
Breakfast and lunch
Forgotten World Highway — Tangarakau Gorge to Mt Damper Falls
This stretch of the Forgotten World Highway is a journey into one of the North Island’s most atmospheric landscapes. From the quiet, fern draped walls of the Tangarakau Gorge, the road winds through deep green valleys and rugged backcountry before reaching the carpark for Mt Damper Falls. A short, easy walk leads to one of the highest waterfalls in the region — a spectacular ribbon of water dropping into a forested amphitheater. It’s a perfect blend of remote road riding, hidden valley scenery, and a rewarding leg stretch to a truly memorable viewpoint.
