The CYO will be presenting its FALL 2026 concert “Storybook” on November 9, 2026 in Anderson Auditorium in the Hurley School of Music. Among the compositions to be performed will be the world-premiere of Centenary Professor Emeritus & CYO Founder-Dr. Todd Gabriel’s “Chasing Churches” for strings and chimes. The piece was written and dedicated to the current CYO conductor, Dan Santelices.
Dr. Gabriel was inspired to write this piece which loosely reflects the ongoing, musical freelance life of Mr. Santelices traveling and performing for church services, weddings and funerals for many of houses of worship in Ark-La-Tex area and beyond. “The chimes, reflect the tolling of the bells announcing the hour. Their prominence is that almost of a solo instrument—even though there is little to no change in pitch tones. There is also a sustained theme in the strings, embedded in the texture, that resembles a hymn tune”
Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, of which the Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty—essentially a lullaby, Tom Thumb—representing the melancholy of a boy lost in the woods and The Fairy Garden will be performed. A personal favorite of Mr. Santelices, it is musical storytelling at its finest and emotionally moving.
Sergei Prokofiev’s musical adaptation of Peter and the Wolf is one of the most well-known stories set to music with instrument and instrument groups representing the characters in the story. The listener, as a bonus gets to know the personality and sound of the instruments. Robert Blue, besides being Centenary’s Chief Financial Officer is a well-known community theater actor. His most recent credit was in the title main character role, Lieutenant Davenport, in “A Soldier’s Story”. This will be his first foray working in a speaking role with orchestra.
