IOMO Gallery is pleased to present ‘Celălalt / The Other’, a group exhibition curated by Thom Oosterhof. In what is the second major collaboration between the gallery and the Amsterdam-based curator / writer, the exhibition seeks to recontextualize the power structures of those that exist outside of the norm.
Where his previous exhibition in the gallery, ‘In the Body Lies the Truth’, imported a universally recognizable narrative, Oosterhof now excavates one found within the rich cultural history of Romania itself.
The exhibition presents the works of 16 carefully selected artists from across the globe. The artists include Michael Alexander Campbell, Silvia Capuzzo, Ambra Castagnetti, Remus Grecu, Jure Kastelic, Li Ran, Aks Misyuta, Josh Raz, Calli Ryan, Jan-Luka Schmitz, Rafa Silvares, Sarah Slappey, Blair Whiteford, Amber Wynne-Jones, Isabelle Zetterstrom and Alexandre Zhu.
Here an excerpt from the exhibition text:
The Romanian word for "other", celălalt, carries more weight than its English equivalent. It implies both exclusion and a kind of dangerous power. A power that comes precisely from standing outside what a culture agrees to call normal. This is the concept at the heart of the exhibition.
Romanian folklore has always given that power a face. Its outsiders aren't incidental. They are feared and revered in equal measure, because their refusal to conform is exactly what grants them access to something ordinary life can't reach.
