Celtic Connections Presents Fiona Soe Paing and Quinie, in a double bill showcase of experimental approaches to the Scots song tradition.Fiona Soe Paing's hypnotic audiovisual show, part live concert, part film, brings to life her acclaimed album Sand, Silt, Flint, praised by Songlines as “a sublimely powerful and lingering experience” and by Iggy Pop as “advanced and beautiful.” With haunting live vocals, striking visuals by Isla Goldie, archival audio fragments from the School of Scottish Studies, and recorded contributions from premier Scottish instrumentalists Paul Anderson and Alice Allen, this mesmerising audiovisual experience charts a dreamlike journey through time and place - a hypnotic fusion of music, myth and moving image.
Quinie will perform Forefowk, Mind Me, a collection of accompanied and unaccompanied Scots song, with her full band (Smallpipes, Viola, Duduk, Bouzouki, Double bass). Described as 'soul rattling stuff' by The Guardian, it was announced as their 'Best Folk Album of the Year’ (2025). Inspired by Lizzie Higgins, Quinie’s songs investigate how voice can capture the sound and feel of the pipes. Weaving together Scots, Irish, and Gaelic influence with composition and improvisation, the result is a contemporary yet timeless sound. Songlines say that “Instrumentally and vocally it’s a stunning set; arresting, demanding, revealing and absorbing… once heard, unforgotten.”
This performance is for Celtic Connections fans who care about tradition and are curious about where it will go next. Perfect for those looking for atmosphere, experimentation and song shaped by people and places rather than polished for the museum. For fans of innovators like Martyn Bennett, Alasdair Roberts, Aiden O’Rourke and Shirley Collins.
