Rick passed away on September 13, 2026 at Unity Point Hospital in Dubuque, surrounded by his family. His wishes were for no services to be held, but rather a Celebration of Life.
Rick was born February 5, 1947 in Jamestown, North Dakota. At the age of three, the family moved to Minot, North Dakota. Rick was the son of Floyd and Pearl Hanson and brother to Carol, Sue and Randy. He was the father to his son David and daughter Dawn, and grandfather to Jack, Orion, Rhiannon and Brayden. He was the uncle to many nieces and nephews and friend to many more.
In 1971, at the age of 24, Rick moved to Dubuque, Iowa.
In Dubuque, Rick worked at Georgia Pacific for over 40 years before retiring. During his retirement years he picked up a couple of, “need to stay busy” jobs. One of them being a porter at Vinny Vanucchis in Dubuque as well as being a housekeeper at the Q Casino, also located in Dubuque.
He was a member of the Dubuque Boat Club for 25 years being elected commodore in 1987.
Throughout his life in Dubuque, Rick loved golfing, bowling, having a couple of beers (until quitting drinking in 1992), and hanging out with close friends and family. Later in life, Rick enjoyed attending his grandkids sporting and drama events, going to the movies, going to “The Walmart,” going out to restaurants, one of his favorites being Sunshine Restaurant, and trying to win big at the casino with his best friend, Diane.
Rick was the type of person who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. We invite anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Rick Hanson to come celebrate our Dad, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle and Friend! Let’s Party!!!
