About this Event
This event brings together scholars and friends of the college to reflect on his life, work, and enduring legacy.
In the 1530s, Nowell conducted some of Oxford's first tutorials at Brasenose; in the 1540s, he inaugurated the Latin play as first headmaster of Westminster; and after a period of Marian exile he returned to England as Dean of St Paul's, often clashing with Elizabeth I until his death in 1602. A central figure in Tudor humanism and Principal and major benefactor of the college, Nowell's Catechism shaped English religious and educational life for generations.
