BTG opened at the Oregon Historical Society in 2016. It broke attendance records, started a citywide conversation about Chinese American history and ultimately led to the founding of the Museum. To mark the milestone, the Museum has completed the initial phase of updating and expanding the permanent exhibition, a process that will continue over the next two years as we continue to discover new stories from our communities.
The updates include an expanded performing arts vignette featuring Bong Wai Chen's theater backdrop from the CCBA, and more of the restaurants, laundries and other businesses that made up Chinatown. A reimagined pharmacy shows how gambling rooms were tucked behind storefronts. A new Chinese Arts Studio highlights Wing K. Leong, Bong Wai Chen and Chinese students of the era. The military collection features WWI and WWII memorabilia alongside a new veterans' memorial wall, and new storytelling carries the history of Portland's Chinese American community through 1980. "This anniversary is an invitation to celebrate our progress," said Anna Truxes, Executive Director. "We know this work is ongoing as we continue to unearth more stories about our community."
The October 30 opening is free and open to the public.
