Settlement and Ceremony on the Lizard - Community archaeology at Boden, St Anthony in Meneage: James Gossip, Senior Archaeologist, CAU.Thursday 12th November 2026 7.30pm – 9.00pm
IN PERSON AT the Queen’s Hotel, Penzance.
In 1991, at Boden Vean on the east coast of the Lizard, a farmer's chance discovery led to the CAU excavation of an Iron Age fogou and enclosure, alongside evidence for Bronze Age occupation.
Public interest in the site gave rise to the formation of the Meneage Archaeology Group, who have spent the past 18 years further exploring the fogou and its setting, conducting extensive excavations covering 2000 years of activity. Finds include lavishly decorated Bronze Age pots, unusual Roman imports, evidence of ceremony and unusual features which are yet to be fully understood.
This talk summarises the archaeology of Boden, the work of MAG and plans for the future at this special site.
James Gossip FSA is a senior archaeologist at CAU. After picking up a trowel in Oxford for the first time in 1987 he worked for a number of commercial units around the country before settling at CAU in 1999. Since then, James has led a number of major fieldwork projects, including excavations at King Arthur's Hall and St Levan's Chapel, Scheduled Monument surveys for the Monumental Improvement Project, and many, such as St Piran's Oratory, where community archaeology and the role of volunteers has been the focus. In 2023 he received Cornwall Heritage Trust's Heritage Champion Award and in 2025 was shortlisted for the Marsh Community Archaeology Awards.
