Carter Mountain Brass Band, under the direction of Debbi Gibson, is delighted to present a concert at the First United Methodist Church, 18 Wesley Way, (Off Rt.11-A, near the 3/11 bypass) on Sunday, Oct. 4th at 3 PM. A suggested donation of $8 will be collected at the door, with all proceeds going to the church as a 'Thank You' for allowing us to use the building as our rehearsal space. A reception immediately following the concert will give the audience an opportunity to meet the band members while indulging in light fare.
As our country commemorates 250 years since declaring independence, we present a program highlighting the birth and development of American popular music. Building off the foundation of everything that came before, composers and performers from our great nation blended their influences, experimented, and innovated from the late 19th century through the mid 20th and beyond, constructing a unique musical identity that would define the art form the world over. From marches to ragtime, on to big band and eventually the jazz standards that would form the great American Songbook, nearly every genre of contemporary popular music has its roots in this period of boundless American creativity.
We invite you to join us as we present a program that includes the aforementioned marches, ragtime, and big band selections. Along the way, we'll also perform a suite of folk tunes, a musical depiction of the Civil War, and a classic of the American theatre by George Gershwin.
The band will also stray from our summer theme to present an essential masterwork of brass band repertoire and a composition by the late Brian Story that he dedicated to Carter Mountain and our former director John Beyrent. We're confident that these more personal selections will help make this a memorable afternoon for all in attendance.
About Carter Mountain Brass Band:
Over twenty years ago, a number of musicians in the brass section of the Gilford Community Band had an idea. At the time, the band only performed during the summer and these intrepid men and women shared a common desire to play in an ensemble all year long. After a series of meetings at the residence of two founding members, on Carter Mountain in New Hampton, NH, our brass band was born, named for the location of our inception.
John Beyrent, music educator and trumpet player, was the director of the Gilford Community Band at that time and became the band's first conductor. Since the very beginning, our programs have reflected the rich heritage of brass music from the 16th century through the 19th century and into the present day's modern music. We have performed throughout the state of New Hampshire and beyond. In addition to John Beyrent, the band has been led by conductors Steve Hertling and Mike Mikuski.
In 2018, Carter Mountain welcomed a new conductor. Debbi Gibson is a retired music educator who served in the Laconia School District for 27 years as a band and chorus director and curriculum supervisor. In retirement, Debbi teaches at Lakes Region Community College, conducts the New Horizon Band and the Taylor Community Chorus, and leads us from the podium.
Our newly anointed manager is Ian McCarthy, a brass instrument repair and restoration technician by day, cornetist and trumpeter by night. Ian makes sure we have music to play and somewhere to play it and keeps the ship afloat. We are very lucky to have such a capable and outgoing young man handling these responsibilities.
