About this Event
Careers and Communication in Geoscience: Live
The energy industry is rapidly changing, and for geoscientists, it can be an unsettling time. However, your subsurface skills remain vital in supporting the energy transition, if you know where to apply them and how to communicate their value.
Join the England AAPG YP for an exclusive evening of two expert technical talks by industry-leading geoscientists who will guide you through actionable strategies for job applications and scientific networking, and show you how to use visuals and communication to stand out in your geoscience career.
Evening Schedule:
Talk 1:
Subsurface Careers in the Energy Transition: same skills, different direction
Dr Kirstie Wright, a Higher Subsurface Geoscientist at the British Geological Survey, will discuss how core subsurface skills remain highly valuable across industries. Drawing on her own career transition from oil and gas to decarbonisation-focused geoscience, she will explore how geoscientists can adapt their expertise to new opportunities emerging in the energy transition.
Talk 2:
The Art (and Science) of Visual Communication
Dr Lucía Pérez-Díaz, a computational geoscientist at Halliburton and a freelance author-illustrator based in Oxford, will highlight the growing importance of visual communication in science. Her talk explores how principles from art and design can help scientists communicate complex ideas more clearly, reach wider audiences, and even unlock unexpected career opportunities.
Together, these talks offer practical insights for students, early-career scientists, and professionals interested in the future of geoscience careers.
