About this Event

Innovation has shaped Alberta’s oil sands and continues to improve production and environmental performance. Join our presenters from Oil Sands Alliance to explore the region and the advances in carbon capture and storage.

Abstract:

Canada has the fourth largest oil reserves in the world, and the oil sands is home to 97% of those reserves. Oil sands output reached 3.5 million barrels per day in 2025, generating $157.4 billion in exports in 2024, 520,000 direct and indirect jobs, and $153 billion in government revenues between 2018 and 2024.

Against that backdrop, Oil Sands Alliance members are advancing the proposed Pathways Project: a CO₂ transportation network and storage hub able to move and permanently store CO2 from multiple oil sands facilities in an underground hub near Cold Lake, Alberta.

The case for carbon capture and storage rests on proven experience: 77 CCS projects operate worldwide, and locally, Quest has stored over 9 million tonnes since 2015.

The story of the oil sands, and carbon capture and storage, is centered around innovation. Both incremental and step changes have improved production and environmental performance over time, with more innovations on the horizon. Join our presenters to learn more about the oil sands in Alberta and how operators are advancing carbon capture to support Canada’s ambition to become a global energy superpower.

About the Speakers:

Amberly Dooley, P.Eng., EP - Vice President, Policy and Government Relations

As the Vice President of Policy and Government Relations for Oil Sands Alliance, Amberly leads the Policy and Government Relations teams, which advance advocacy on behalf of Alberta’s oil sands sector including both in situ and mining operations. Collaborating with Oil Sands Alliance member companies, stakeholders and government, Amberly leads the development of regulatory and policy positions and works to find solutions to issues facing the oil sands industry from land use planning and greenhouse gas emissions management to regulatory application requirements and fiscal frameworks.

Amberly has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. She has extensive experience in managing the policy, regulatory and environmental considerations associated with energy development, having previously worked at the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). She’s also worked at some of the major upstream oil and gas companies in Canada, gaining experience in regulatory and environmental management for mining, oil sands and conventional oil and gas projects and operations.

With a passion for inspiring future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), Amberly serves on the Board of Directors for the Calgary Youth Science Fair in her spare time. The organization, which is run entirely by volunteers, encourages youth to explore technology, engineering and math through their annual science fair.

Stephen Arseniuk, P.Eng., MBA - Director, Emissions & GHG EPA

Stephen is Director, Emissions & GHG EPA at the Oil Sands Alliance. A self-described wayfinder, he works at the intersection of technology, business strategy, and environmental performance, helping Canada's oil sands companies identify and advance solutions that reduce emissions while supporting responsible energy production. With more than 20 years of experience across operations, technology development, and industry collaboration, Stephen has led initiatives spanning extraction technologies, solvent-assisted recovery, mining innovation, and greenhouse gas reduction. He holds a Mechanical Engineering degree and MBA from the University of Calgary and is a Professional Engineer in Alberta.
