Join us at Malco Paradiso in Memphis for a special screening of Caravan of Hope, followed by a panel discussion with the filmmakers and individuals who were part of the historic 1982 Caravan of Hope fundraiser.Caravan of Hope is a documentary that tells the remarkable story of how WDIA and people across the Mid-South rallied to support Mound Bayou, Mississippi, one of the nation’s oldest Black-founded towns. In 1982, as Mound Bayou faced a financial crisis that threatened the future of the town, its mayor reached out to WDIA for help. What followed was an extraordinary act of Black solidarity.
WDIA radio personalities and listeners raised funds, spread the word, and organized a caravan of cars that traveled nearly 100 miles from Memphis to Mound Bayou to deliver the money in person. Their collective effort helped the town reopen its doors and demonstrated what was possible when everyday people came together around a shared commitment to community.
More than four decades later, Caravan of Hope brings this story back to Memphis, where the caravan began. Through archival footage, photographs, and firsthand accounts, the film explores the history of Mound Bayou, the power of WDIA, and the people who made the 1982 fundraiser possible.
Following the film, audience members are invited to stay for a panel discussion featuring the filmmakers and individuals who participated in the original 1982 fundraiser, sharing memories and reflections on what the caravan meant then and what its legacy can teach us today.
All tickets includes admission to the Caravan of Hope film screening, post-screening panel discussion, popcorn, and a drink. When purchasing your ticket, you can also add a special Caravan of Hope T-shirt featuring the original slogan from the 1982 fundraiser: “Don’t Let the Bough Break.”
