Led by vocalist, violinist, composer, and arranger Kara Baxter, the Kara Baxter Jazz Quartet brings an eclectic and sophisticated approach to live jazz. Drawing from the Great American Songbook as well as pop, funk, blues, bossa nova, musical theatre, and classical music, Baxter’s arrangements blur the lines between genres while leaving plenty of room for the spontaneity and interplay at the heart of jazz. With a background spanning jazz performance and composition, classical violin, and more than two decades as a performer and educator, Baxter brings an unusually broad musical perspective to the ensemble. Equally at home singing a jazz standard, reinventing a familiar pop song, or picking up the violin, she approaches each selection as an arranger—finding new ways to shape familiar music while preserving what made it compelling in the first place.
The quartet features Jeff Jenkins on piano, Mark Haar on bass, and Doug Montera on drums, accomplished musicians whose versatility and improvisational instincts make the group’s wide-ranging repertoire feel cohesive. Together, the quartet combines exceptional musicianship with warmth, creativity, and a sense of musical conversation that makes each performance distinct.
