About this Event
Join us for the U.S. premiere of an hour-long performance bringing together Bach’s music and the unpublished poetry of Czech writer and Holocaust survivor Arnošt Lustig.
Lustig’s poem The Breaking of the Vessels, written in exile, is heard alongside Bach’s cantata Ich habe genug (BWV 82). Drawing on Jewish mystical tradition, the performance explores memory, hope, and the resilience of humanity in a shattered world.
Mezzo-soprano Marie Kopecká Verhoeven performs with Czech chamber ensemble Barocco sempre molto giovane, under the artistic direction of Josef Krečmer. Grammy and Emmy winner Paul Bogaev, Nancy Petschek-Kohn, and Samuel DeMuria bring Lustig’s words to life.
Created and directed by his daughter Eva Lustigová, the production is part of FestivAL100, marking the centenary of Lustig’s birth.
