About this Event
We are running two talks this evening, for tickets to 'Candlelight History Talks: The History of Tudor Women: Witches to Queens' at 6:15pm, please .
For many centuries, the sea represented something loved and unknown; human beings ventured out onto it, protected by the wooden shield of boats, aware at every moment that death by drowning lay just under the keel. How did they react to spending months in such a terrifying environment?
In this talk, Prof Diane Purkiss explores the legends humans created about who lived in the sea and what the sea was, legends of beautiful fierce women, of a world under the waves that welcomed sailors, legends of vast sea monsters that could swallow entire ships, legends of ships doomed to sail forever without ever reaching port.
Doors open at 8pm, talk starts at 8:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
