CANADIAN ART - Lawren S. Harris

Art Workshop for Adults

📅 October 17, 2026 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM

📍 Newmarket Public Library

With internationally recognized artist Kate Medvedok

We’re excited to begin a new series exploring Canadian art through the artists who helped shape the way we see Canada.

Our first workshop focuses on Lawren S. Harris, one of the most influential figures in Canadian art and a founding member of the Group of Seven. Harris is celebrated for his powerful landscapes of northern Canada, where mountains, forests, ice, and sky are transformed into bold, almost dreamlike compositions.

During the workshop, Kate Medvedok will introduce you to Harris’s artistic approach and guide you step by step as you create your own work inspired by his distinctive style.

🎨 What to expect

  1. An introduction to Lawren S. Harris and his artistic journey
  2. A closer look at Harris’s distinctive visual language and techniques
  3. Step-by-step guidance from Kate Medvedok
  4. Your own artwork inspired by Harris’s style
  5. All materials provided
  6. A welcoming and inspiring atmosphere
  7. Suitable for all levels, including beginners

This workshop launches our Canadian Art Series🍁, a journey through Canadian history, nature, identity, and artistic expression.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll discover how different artists interpreted Canada in completely different ways: from the forests and coastlines of Emily Carr, to the abstract energy of Jean Paul Riopelle, the landscapes of A. Y. Jackson and Tom Thomson, and the distinctive vision of other Canadian artists.

Upcoming workshops:

October 24 — Emily Carr

October 31 — Jean Paul Riopelle

November 7 — A. Y. Jackson

November 14 — Tom Thomson

November 21 — Jean Paul Lemieux

November 28 — Edward John Hughes

Each class offers a chance to learn about an artist, explore their unique style, and create your own interpretation - building a personal collection of artworks inspired by Canada's most celebrated artists.

No previous art experience is required — just curiosity and a love of creativity.
