"Canadian Ancient DNA from North to South"
Dr Scott Cocker, postdoctoral resercher, McMaster University and the Hakai Institute
The field of ancient DNA has expanded greatly over the past 20 years and is becoming a routine addition to the palaeoecologist’s toolkit. In this talk, I will explore how we have been using ancient DNA across Canada, from Yukon Territory to Ontario, investigating Ice Age environments and archaeological sites. Drawing on research in eastern Beringia and at Crawford Lake, I will highlight how ancient DNA is helping us reconstruct past ecosystems, investigate ecological change, and better understand Canada’s environmental and human history. These examples will illustrate the growing potential of ancient DNA research in Canada and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Short Bio : Dr. Scott Cocker is a Postdoctoral Researcher at McMaster University and the Hakai Institute who studies how Arctic environments and ecosystems have changed over thousands of years, with a particular focus on Beringia. His work combines the study of sediments, fossils, and ancient DNA to understand how past climates shaped the landscapes, plants, and animals of the North. He completed his PhD at the University of Alberta in 2024 with Professor Duane Froese and his first Postdoctoral position at the Centre for Palaeogenetics at Stockholm University in Sweden. Through this work, he has gained field experience in Alaska, Sweden, and in northern
Canada on the traditional territories of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, Na-Cho Nyak Dun, and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nations.
